What you can catch off Tangalle
The south coast drops into deep water fast, so pelagics and reef fish are both within easy reach of the harbour.

The hardest-pulling fish on the reef — popping and jigging.
Yellowfin Tuna
Best Dec–Mar
Trolled in the deep blue water offshore.
Dogtooth Tuna
Best Nov–Apr
Deep jigging over the pinnacles — a serious target fish.
Spanish Mackerel
Best Oct–Apr
Fast, sharp-toothed and superb on the grill.
Barracuda
Year-round
Aggressive surface strikes while trolling.
Grouper & Snapper
Year-round
Bottom fishing on the reefs, and the best eating fish we land.
Sailfish

A rare, spectacular billfish hookup on the offshore run.
Queenfish & Bonito
Year-round
Great fun on light spinning gear near the reef edges.

Six ways we fish the Tangalle coast
Tell us what you want to target and the skipper builds the day around it — or leave it to him and we'll fish whatever is running that morning.
Trolling
Lures dragged behind the moving boat to cover water — how we find tuna, mackerel and barracuda.
Popping
Big surface lures worked hard across the reef. Explosive strikes from giant trevally.
Jigging
Metal jigs dropped deep and worked back up — the technique for dogtooth tuna and amberjack.
Spinning
Light rods and small lures along the reef edge. Easy, fun and productive for first-timers.
Bottom fishing
Anchored over structure with bait on the seabed for grouper, snapper and emperor.
Live bait
Available on request — we catch bait first, then fish it for the biggest predators around.
What to expect on the water
From first light at the harbour to a hot grill back on shore — here's how a trip unfolds.
Meet at the harbour
We gather at Tangalle fishing harbour at 6:00 am (8:00 pm for night trips). Meet your skipper, grab a life jacket and board.
Out past the breakers
The boat clears the harbour mouth and heads for the fishing grounds. Lines go in as soon as we reach working water.
Troll the deep water
We troll for pelagics — tuna, mackerel and barracuda — covering ground until we mark fish or birds.
Work the reefs
Popping and jigging over the pinnacles, then anchored bottom fishing for grouper, snapper and emperor.
Photos & return
Back at the harbour we photograph your catch, clean anything you're keeping and arrange a cook-up if you want one.

Out on the water

Before you cast off
The honest answers to the things first-time anglers ask before they step aboard.
Where do the fishing trips leave from?
Tangalle fishing harbour, on the west side of Tangalle town. It's about 5 minutes from Tangalle beach hotels and roughly 30 minutes from Hiriketiya or Dickwella. We'll send the exact meeting point when you book, and we can arrange a pick-up.
What is the best season for deep-sea fishing in Tangalle?
The south coast fishes well all year, but November to April is the prime window — calmer seas, clearer water and the best tuna and giant trevally action. May to September still produces good reef fishing on settled days.
Do I need any fishing experience?
No. The crew rigs the gear, shows you the technique and will hook and hand you the fish if you'd rather just enjoy the fight. Complete beginners land fish with us regularly.
Is the boat private or shared?
Every trip is private. The price is per boat, not per person, so you and your group have the skipper and the boat to yourselves.
How many people fit on the boat?
Comfortably up to 4 anglers plus crew. Larger groups are possible — tell us your numbers and we'll arrange a second boat.
What should I bring?
Sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and light clothing you don't mind getting salty. For night fishing bring a light jacket. If you get seasick easily, take a tablet an hour before departure.
Can children come along?
Yes. Children aged 8 and up are welcome with an adult, and the shorter half-day trip suits families best. Life jackets are provided in every size we have on board.
Can we keep and eat what we catch?
Absolutely. Keep whatever you'd like to eat — we'll clean it at the harbour and can arrange for your guesthouse to grill it that evening. Anything we don't need goes back in the water.
Is a catch guaranteed?
No honest charter can guarantee fish. What we guarantee is that we go to the right spots, use the right methods and fish hard for you. Most trips land fish; some days the ocean has other ideas.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Safety comes first. If the sea is too rough we reschedule at no cost, or refund you in full. The call is made the evening before or at the harbour — never mid-trip.
